Ransomware, explained: from the first click to recovery
Ransomware is an attack that blocks access to systems or data, often combined with a threat to publish stolen information.
What actually happens?
Attackers may enter through a stolen account, a deceptive email, or an unpatched service. They look for valuable data and ways to interrupt operations. Encryption is often a late stage, after the attacker has already moved through the network.
Why should you care?
The damage is more than a ransom demand. Teams may lose access to essential services, customers may be affected, and stolen information can create lasting harm.
What can you do?
Use strong authentication, keep exposed systems updated, separate administrative access, and test recovery from isolated backups. Practice who will make decisions during an incident.
